Seventy one year old Kambah woman, Anne Ions, is busy gearing up for the 18th Canberra International Walking Weekend that will be held on the 4th and 5th April 2009.

Anne has participated in every Canberra 2 day walk over the past seventeen years and is looking forward to completing the Marathon and 20km options in the 2 days of this year’s walk. Her main aim over the next three years is to have participated and completed all of the Canberra 2 day walks.  Apart from the 2 day Walks, Anne has also completed two London Marathons in her time and numerous other athletic events.

Anne has been busy training and is doing at least 6 to 10km every day of the week.  Over the next month she will be increasing the distance to ensure that she is fit and ready on the day.  Anne comes from an acitve family with her Husband, John being a regular Veterans cyclist and her son taking part in orienteering.

When asked what Anne enjoyed about the 2 day walk, she stated that she loved meeting people from interstate and overseas and loved exploring the landmarks of her home city during the event.  She also loves to see the children that do the smaller distances with their parents.  Anne also stated that walking was a great form of exercise that was relatively easy on the body.

In its 18th year, the Canberra International Walking event is a non-competitive 2 day walking event offering distances from 5,10,20 or 30km.  The first day also offers a Marathon distance.  People of all abilities and ages can take part in the event and it is expected that 600 plus participants from the ACT, interstate and overseas will take part. The Walk is also a member event of the IML Walking Association and there have been a number of visitors from overseas that have been regular participants over the eighteen years.
